Harley-Davidson Sportster description

Note: This bike was listed and sold to a non-paying bidder. The winning bidder made no attempt to complete purchase and did not contact me again after auction ended. For that reason I am introducing buyer requirements. If you do not meet the requirements you may contact me to discuss purchasing.

This is a rare, original 1979 XLCH Harley Sportster. Someone added an electric start set up in its past, but this is 1 of only 141 original factory kick-only XLCH's produced in 1979...the very last of the kick-start Sportster.

Although it has been painted, has drag pipes, and electric starter added, it is otherwise in very original condition. All the original lighting is intact, the wiring harness is unmodified except to accommodate the electric starter, etc. The only significant changes from its stock configuration are the repainted fenders, oil tank and battery cover, exhaust, and the 16" natural cast mag rear wheel (still a Harley wheel, but not correct for this year/model).

Mechanically the bike is an 8 out of 10. It starts and runs good, doesn't smoke or have any unusual engine noises. The clutch has been disassembled, cleaned and adjusted. The original Keihin butterfly carburetor has been internally cleaned and adjusted. The charging system functions as it should and all the lights and horn work and the original wiring harness is intact. The engine cases are in nice condition with no cracks or prior weld-repairs. It starts, runs, shifts, and rides like it should but could benefit from some minor TLC (e.g., minor oil leaks, linkage adjustments, snugging fasteners, etc.) before returning to the road.

Cosmetically the bike is around a 7 out of 10. It shows honest wear from 40 years of use but is in good condition for its age. The fenders have been repainted and are in pretty good condition. The tank remains in its original paint and does have a few dings and some scratches but overall it maintains an attractive, presentable appearance (pictures represent condition). The paint could be touched up and/or buffed to enhance it but I have left it, and all other cast, polished or plated surfaces showing their genuine patina so that cosmetic reconditioning (or not) could be left to the new owner's preference.

Other notable features include:

  • Rare Kick-Start
  • Electric start added and functions
  • Retains original electronic ignition
  • OE “#1” logo points cover
  • Original seat

Ever since The King threw his leg over his ’56 Harley-Davidson and the Black Rebels rolled into Carbonville, the combination of motorcycles and rock have been as combustible as gas and spark. Early moto-rock lived for the most part on the fringes of pop music, in the pomped-up rockabilly of guys like Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.

Survey Says Harley-Davidson and BMW Motorcycles Less Reliable Than Japanese – But Owners Don’t Care

Tue, 26 Mar 2013

A new survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center finds BMW and Harley-Davidson  owners are much more likely to report major problems with their motorcycles than owners of Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycles. The survey, which will appear on the April 2013 issue of Consumer Reports, says one in three BMW owners reported experiencing a major problem with their bikes in the last four years. Harley-Davidson owners were slightly better, with one in four reporting serious issues.

Fundraising Harley Prints By 8-year-old MDA Ambassador On Sale

Tue, 10 Sep 2013

MDA Ambassador Reagan Imhoff wanted the artwork she created with Harley-Davidson designer Mathew Hintz to “raise a lot of money for MDA so we can have more scientists to make medicines.” The original drawing of a purple Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout motorcycle brought in $3500 on August 31 at the MDA auction during the 110th Anniversary Celebration. The pair hopes to raise even more with sales of the limited edition, signed prints, available through www.HintzStudios.com. “I’m happy our artwork raised some money, and hope we sell all of the prints!” said Reagan, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a painful neuromuscular disease.
