New 2014 FZ-09 Super Torque 850 Cross-Plane Triple *Amount financed and final credit approval determined actual APRIL & payment NO Setup, Prep or Dealer Freight Charges ~ $7,946 ~ Key Features: Introducing an all-new 847cc liquid-cooled, in-linethree cyl, DUAL OVERHEAD CAM, 12-valve engine with fuel injection. Thisengine combines advanced high tech components includingYCC-T® and Yamaha D-Mode, with a crossplane conceptcrankshaft to deliver an exciting, torquey and quick-revvingengine character. This three cyl engine features Yamaha’s “CrossplaneCrankshaft Concept” that provides linear torque developmentin response to the rider’s throttle input. Among theadvantages of the in-line three cyl engine are: (1) lineartorque development, (2) even firing intervals that providesmooth torque characteristics and a good feeling of powerin the low to mid rpm range, (3) a light, slim and compactdesign, and (4) performance that combines the characteristicsof both two cyl and four cyl engines. To reduce vibration and deliver a smoother ride, the enginehas a primary coupled-force balancer that revolves in theopposite direction and at the same speed as the crankshaft. A new six gear transmission has also been adopted tomatch the new engine. The transmission has optimizedgear ratios that help to deliver engine torque efficiently. The result is a transmission that helps bring out moreof the low- to mid-speed torque and excellent responsecharacteristics. The ride-by-wire Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T)system senses the slightest throttle input by the rider, relaysthe data to the ECU, which instantaneously calculatesthe ideal throttle valve opening based on engine rpm andthrottle opening, and then sends commands to a servo-motoractuator that moves the throttle valve which activelycontrols the intake airflow volume. This is a technologycontributing to the rider’s feeling of torque and controllabilityfrom the new three cyl engine. Electronic fuel injection has been adopted to provideoutstanding drivability. 12-hole injectors attached directlyto the cylinder head deliver a highly pressurized spray ofatomized fuel with droplets as small as a few microns. Thisenables high-precision injection directed at the valve skirtsthat contributes to optimum fuel combustion resulting inoutstanding drivability and performance. The FZ-09 is equipped with Yamaha D-MODE (or “DriveMode”) variable throttle control system to allow the riderto choose the optimum engine character for their ridingsituation. The rider can choose at will from 3 throttlevalve control maps (Standard Mode, “A” Mode, and “B”Mode) for different performance characteristics. Operationis performed by a button on the handle bars. STD Modeis set to accommodate a wide range of riding conditions. In this mode the rider can enjoy the three cyl engine’slinear torque feeling from low speeds all the way up tohigh speeds. A Mode lets the rider enjoy sharper throttleresponse in the low-to mid-rpm range than the STD Mode. BMode lets the rider enjoy milder throttle response than theSTD Mode for more relaxed power characteristics. Engine: This lightweight liquid-cooled, 847cc, 4-stroke, in-line three cyl,DUAL OVERHEAD CAM, 4-valve engine with downdraft intake and fuel injection isall new. With a 78 x 59.1mm bore x stroke and 11.5:1 compressionratio, it produces an exciting, torquey and quick-revvingengine character. Some of the advantages of the three cyl engine in the FZ-09include linear torque development due to the even firing intervalsthat provide smooth torque characteristics and a good feelingof power up into the low to mid rpm range, as well as combiningdesirable characteristics of both two cyl and four cylengines. In addition, the engine design can be light, slim andcompact. To reduce vibration and help give a smoother ride, the engine hasa primary coupled-force balancer that revolves in the oppositedirection and at the same speed as the crankshaft. The connecting rods are made using the fracture split (FS)method to ensure a high degree of circular precision in the rod’sbig-end ring for a precise fit and smoother crank revolution. Thefracture split (FS) method is where the big-end ring of a forgedconnecting rod is split in 2 by applying a sharp impact. Thiscreates a perfectly matching split surface that naturally producesa much more precise mating surface when they are boltedtogether again around the crankshaft. To provide both exciting and quick revving torque characteristicsand a unique intake sound, the three cyl intake funnels havebeen designed with uneven lengths. The 1st cylinder funnel is102.8mm, the 2nd 82.8mm and the 3rd is 122.8mm. Thiscombines with the effects of the YCC-T system to contribute toan excellent torquey engine character. The FZ-09 transmission takes full advantage of the low-to-mid-range torque and excellent response characteristics of this in-line, three cyl fuel-injected engine. The six gear transmission has been designed to be very compact, enhancing the overall narrow three cyl design. Chassis/Suspension: The wheelbase, seat height, fuel tank width, rake and otherdimensions are all set to work with the qualities of the compactthree cyl engine to achieve a sporty, light and neutral handlingcharacter, an upright riding position and a narrow feeling chassisat the seat/tank junction. For excellent damping characteristics, the front suspension isan inverted fork with 41mm inner tubes with 5.4 ins of travel. The front suspension features adjustment for spring preload andrebound damping. The rear suspension features a linked-type Monocross® shock. The shock is positioned below the seat and features an almosthorizontal alignment. This unique positioning contributes to masscentralization and a slimmer body design. The rear suspension isalso adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. Theseadjustments allow for different riding conditions and rider preferences. Newly designed, 10-spoke lightweight cast aluminum wheelsare pre-owned, fitted with a 120/70ZR17 front tire and 180/55ZR17rear tire. The tires have been designed with an optimally-tunedinternal structure that contributes to good handling stability. Front brakes consist of 2 floating 298mm discs with 4-potopposed piston calipers. The newly designed calipers are radialmounted. More features: The aluminum, tapered-type handle bars – a 1st for a Yamahasportbike – provide a good balance of strength and light weight. The fuel tank, with its deeply recessed knee grip area, contributesto a narrow seat/tank juncture. Newly designed, compact, hexagonal-type rearview mirrorsmatch the “mass forward” design of the rest of the bike. A newly designed lightweight, compact, full LCD instrumentpanel is adopted. The tachometer has a digital bar-type displaywith gear position indicator. The automatic starter button is a newslide-type that incorporates the engine cut-off switch is an integratedbutton for a modern and high-quality appearance. The brake pedal, shift pedal, and footrests are made of forgedaluminum for light weight and excellent appearance. The LED taillight has separate left and right lights that illuminate when the taillight is on and across the entire lens when the brake light is on. 2014 Yamaha FZ-09 Specifications Engine Engine Type 847cc liquid-cooled DOUBLE OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT 4-stroke; 12 valves Bore & Stroke 78.0 x 59.1mm Compression Ratio 11.5:1 Fuel Delivery Fuel Injection Ignition TCI: Transistor Controlled Ignition Transmission six gear; multiplate wet clutch Final Drive O-ring chain Chassis Suspension / Front 41mm fork; adjustable preload and rebound damping; 5.4-in travel Suspension / Rear Single shock; adjustable preload and rebound damping; 5.1-in travel Brakes / Front Dual hydraulic disc, 298mm Brakes / Rear Hydraulic disc, 245mm Tires / Front 120/70-ZR17 Tires / Rear 180/55-ZR17 Dimensions Length 81.7 in Width 32.1 in Height 44.7 in Seat Height 32.1 in Wheelbase 56.7 in Ground Clearance 5.3 in Rake (Caster Angle) 25.0° Fuel Capacity 3.7 gal Fuel Economy 44 miles-per-gallon (EPA estimate) Wet Weight 414 pound Other Warranty one year (Limited Factory Warranty)*** *** Genuine Yamaha Extended Service policy available w/ up to five years total coverage at very substantial savings. Ben Spies Video Interview on 2012 MotoGP Season [Video]

Thu, 22 Mar 2012

Yamaha Factory Racing today posted on its YouTube page a video interview with Ben “Elbowz” Spies, in which Spies discusses the soon to start 2012 season of MotoGP. In his usual calm, cool and under control manner Spies speaks frankly on how he prefers the 1000cc GP machine, saying it suits his style (elbows out!) better than the previous seasons’ 800cc bikes because the extra torque and horsepower of the liter-class bikes are, essentially, better matched to his physical stature. Spies also answers honestly the question of who he thinks he needs to keep an eye in 2012, including his teammate, Jorge Lorenzo.

Filling a void with an RD350LC

Mon, 29 Jul 2013

Last winter I managed to fill a void in my life when I stumbled on a very reasonably priced Yamaha RD350LC.  It was a tad scruffy, had the wrong exhausts but most importantly it was blue and white with all numbers matching.  I had the usual euphoria when the deal was done but I underestimated how much pleasure this particular purchase would continue to deliver another eight months down the line. The difference with this old bike is, instead of just taking it for the occasional ride I was talked into doing a full nut and bolt restoration.  Having never taking a bike apart completely before, initially it was quite daunting but I soon found the RD is easy to work on so it turned into a truly satisfying experience.  I’ve had some help from LC enthusiasts with the rebuild, however, the stripping, sourcing and organising was a total labour of love.  And call me sad but it has made me bond with this bike like no other which only adds to the feel good factor.  The bike cost £1800 and I’ve spent around £1000 but I reckon my mint Elsie is now worth a fair bit more.   I fancy rejuvenating a Fizzy  next time but there’s lots of other cheap 70’s and 80’s winter projects  out there so why not have a go yourself?

Recall for 2011 Yamaha FJR1300

Mon, 11 Jul 2011

Yamaha is initiating a recall campaign the 2011 FJR1300, just a week after a separate recall for the 2006-2009 versions of the sport touring motorcycle. Like the earlier campaign, the recall for the 2011 Yamaha FJR1300 is for an electrical issue, this time for the brake lights. According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, brake light on affected units may not illuminate when the front brake lever is applied because the activating mechanism in the brake switch can bind.
