2011 AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Champion Josh Hayes

Tue, 06 Sep 2011

Josh Hayes has won his second consecutive AMA Superbike title, clinching the championship in a tightly contested Race One at the 2011 season finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

The lead changed hands several times before Hayes emerged with the win, his third of the season. The Monster Energy Graves Yamaha R1 rider was consistent all season, finishing with three wins and 12 podium finishes in 14 races, and finishing fourth in the two times he missed the podium.

Hayes’ consistency gave him a 363-358 advantage in the final standings over Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young who also had a strong season with seven wins and who also only missed out on the podium twice. Hayes gave Young credit for putting up a tough challenge.

“Man, what an exhale [I let out] once we crossed the line and it was over and done with – Blake made me race my tail off for that last one, and it was great,” Hayes said after Race One in New Jersey. “He rode like a champ this year; he’s won seven races and I’ve only won three, but my bad days weren’t as bad as his. He’s still learning and he’s young, and I’m sure next year’s going to be the same thing all over again. He rode a fantastic year, and what a final day. He really pulled it together, and man, rode like a Superbike racer.”
