Hayes to Race in Valencia GP for Injured Colin Edwards

Mon, 31 Oct 2011

Josh Hayes will make his MotoGP racing debut at the Nov. 6 Valencia Grand Prix in Spain as an injury replacement for fellow American Colin Edwards.

Already set to test the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 M1 after the season-ending race, Hayes was a logical choice to ride in Edwards’ place. Edwards will be sidelined with injuries sustained in the crash at the Sepang round that claimed Marco Simoncelli’s life.

Hayes was invited to the test as a reward for winning his second consecutive AMA Superbike title with the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha team. With the two teams’ common ties with both Yamaha and Monster, Hayes’ Tech 3 ride is a natural fit.

As for Edwards, Valencia would have been his final race in his seven-year tenure on Yamaha machines. Instead, the tragic Sepang round marked a sad ending to his time with Yamaha. Edwards is signed with the Forward Racing CRT squad for next season. Edwards requires surgery to repair the cartilage around the top of his left humerus bone.
